DDU finalists selected

The Dental Defence Union (DDU) has announced the outstanding teachers and trainers who have reached the final of the 2007 DDU Educational Awards.

The finalists, selected from a shortlist of nominees, will be competing in three different categories at the award ceremony on Wednesday 7 November at The Caledonian Club, London.

The two finalists in each category are:

DDU Dentist Teacher of the Year:
Giles Perryer from University of Birmingham Dental School
Callum Youngson from Liverpool University Dental Hospital and School.

DDU VT Teacher of the Year:
Catherine Brady from the Oxford Deanery
Anne Milarvie from Yorkshire Deanery.

Dental Care Professional (DCP) Teacher of the Year:
Jane Holt from the Leeds Dental Institute
Judy Fraser from the School of Professionals Complementary to Dentistry, Portsmouth.

Head of the DDU, Rupert Hoppenbrouwers, said: ‘All those nominated by their dental school or deanery have already demonstrated their ability to inspire and motivate students but we feel it is important to publicly recognise their achievements and give them this opportunity to showcase the best in dental teaching and training.

‘Of course, dental education does not stop when a professional has qualified or completed training. Throughout their careers, dental professionals are expected to keep abreast of the latest standards and best practice guidance in their work, from the GDC’s Standards for Dental Professionals to guidance issued by the Faculty of General Dental Practice.

‘DDU members often ask what the legal status of guidelines are and whether they are obliged to follow them, and so our theme for this year’s awards is Standards, Protocols and Guidelines. After our finalists have given their presentations, we have a series of presentations which promise to shed some light on this complex area.’

The finalists in all three award categories will compete for the titles in front of a selected audience of dental academics and professionals at the awards ceremony. Finalists will be judged across a number of criteria, including knowledge of the subject, enthusiasm and ability to motivate. Winners and runners-up will be awarded £250 each and the overall winners in each category will receive £1,000 towards the cost of educational materials for their schools or VT schemes. In addition to the main sponsor, Dentsply, the awards are also supported by the British Dental Association.
