Rugby trio tackles a spot of dentistry

Chief Dental Officer Barry Cockcroft was flanked by a trio of heavies when he visited Bristol Dental Hospital and School.

They were members of the Bristol rugby team who joined him at the opening of its £15 million facility.

The players – Mariano Sambucetti, Roy Winters and Joe El Abd – also enjoyed a bit of dentistry themeselves at the photo call, undergoing some dental treatment as well as dressing up as the dental team for the cameras!

The new extension will accommodate 29 new dental students who, when qualified, will provide much-needed NHS dental treatment to an estimated 63,000 patients a year.

There are also 12 new places for dental hygienist/therapist students.

A joint bid from the University and the United Bristol Healthcare Trust (UBHT) secured £15,337,000 in capital investment for the work from the Department of Health, via the Strategic Health Authority (£13,137,000) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (£2,200,000).
