Keeping it small, but making it big

We met up with the owner of a small computer hardware company that has established itself as a big mover in the world of dentistry. Here, we ask PRR Computers the secret of their success…

If it’s the personal touch you’re looking for when it comes to computer installation, back up and support of your practice’s management system, then Pam Rodgers, managing director and founder of PRR Computers in Blackburn, suggests you look no further.

Pam prides herself on the company’s ability to offer a bespoke service to each and every practice she deals with.

PRR (it stands for Pamela Rose Rodgers) Computers is a small set-up based in Blackburn with nine regional representatives covering the whole of the England – with 66% of their business based in the south of England.

It was founded in 1997 in Pam’s front bedroom and it has blossomed, nurtured gently through its infancy by Pam until steadily developing and expanding into the friendly service it is today.

And testimony to its burgeoning success is that practitioners and practice managers keep returning. Pam is rightly proud of the fact that in all the years of trading, PRR has never once made a loss.

Already PRR Computers has established itself as a main player supplying hardware for every practice management system available in the dentistry market.

Their secret is to offer that personal touch – the salesperson who first talks to a client sees it through to the installation on the day and beyond, offering the support at the end of the phone, email and ultimately, return visits to the practice if necessary.

Pam maintains this is vital to the success of PRR – ‘It’s not just a case of who picks up the phone first,’ she says.

Specialising in the installation and maintenance of network systems within the dental Industry, the company has established an impressive client-base of both NHS and private practices.

PRR Computers understand that each client is unique and therefore have developed a maintenance contract that can be adapted to suit each and every circumstance, providing a bespoke service to all members of their client base.

They supply hardware for all practice management systems, including DentalPlus, Pearl Dent, Exact and Kodak.

PRR Computers covers all aspects of new network from initial consultation and advice, free-of-charge site surveys, planning, cable installation, hardware and software supply follo- up maintenance and support from experienced engineers and their helpdesk team.
The company does advertise, but word-of-mouth and referrals work well for PRR – and with a website that offers full support and an option for ‘ring back’, it’s easy to see why clients choose PRR Computers.

Contact is made easy – the company always accessible with a 24/7 service, solutions offered at the click of a button.

As its website – PRR Computers.co.uk – promises: ‘With by far the largest percentage of our business coming as a result of referrals, we believe that our attention to after sales support and continued monitoring or client’s requirements speaks for itself.’

Following installation a preventative maintenance program will ensure the continued smooth running of the network.

As well as supplying computer hardware to practices, PRR Computers offers:

• Hardware maintenance contracts
• Offsite background service
• Monitored back up service – in which the engineers can do a weekly check that a practice’s back up is working efficiently
• Back-up tapes – restoring data
• Purely dental products – medical keyboards
• Telephone helpline
• Patient file-scanning service
• Maintenance contracts
• Health and safety training
• Hardware consultation
• Free-of-charge site surveys

‘If there is a problem, we can help over the phone. We also provide online live support and have remote connection into practices so we can check and run anti-virus programs with our offsite background service – working even while the practice manager is working, without interfering in what they’re doing,’ Pam explains.

‘We give assurance that our service is completely confidential and at all times we protect the practice privacy.

‘Even with our dental scanning, it’s the same man in a van who picks up the records, brings them back to our offices where they are booked in, scanned and delivers them back,’ she says.

‘We don’t send the records away like some companies that offer a scanning service, and if the paper records then need to be shredded, they’re done so in our car park in front of us and not send away – so the risks of breaching confidentiality are decreased.’

The turnaround time is two weeks.

To complement these services, PRR also sell dental products such as medical keyboards, intra-oral cameras and video glasses. With plans in the pipeline to develop this section further, PRR is set to become a one-stop-shop for dental practices throughout the UK.

Let the website speak for itself: ‘A small company, with ‘customer satisfaction’ being a primary objective.’ PRR Computers may be small, but it’s perfectly formed!
