Steele updates politicians on dentistry review

The leader of an independent review into NHS dentistry in England, Professor Jimmy Steele, updated politicians on his progress at the first full meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Dentistry.

The private meeting, led by chairwoman Charlotte Atkins MP, was the first in a programme of events and fact-finding visits that are planned to take place in 2009.

The APPG, supported by the British Dental Association, British Dental Trade Association, General Dental Council, Dental Practitioners’ Association and the Dental Laboratories Association, aims to act as a focus for dental and oral health issues, raising the profile of dentistry and highlighting the views of patients and practitioners.

Ms Atkins, a co-author of last year’s Commons Health Committee report into dental services, whose call for a review to address problems with dental provision prompted Prof Steele’s appointment by the Department of Health, said: ‘It was fitting that the first meeting of the APPG enabled interested MPs and peers to hear from the team tasked with the review. We look forward to seeing the results of Professor Steele’s work.’

As part of the independent review of NHS dentistry, Prof Steele is also providing regular updates on the emerging key themes and issues at www.dh.gov.uk/en/Healthcare/Primarycare/Dental/DH_094418.

These informal updates are aimed at reflecting on the responses people have been sending into the review mailbox and his own observations as he engages with key stakeholders around the country.
