University appoints new director of dental research

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has appointed Professor StJohn Crean as director of dental research and knowledge transfer at UCLan.

Professor Crean will be working within the Institute for Postgraduate Dental Education (IPDE) at the University, having previously held the post of associate director of undergraduate dental studies and year 3 lead at Peninsula Dental School for two years.

His primary focus will be to establish UCLan as one of the foremost primary dental care research institutions while building on the University’s specialism in clinical environment research.

Professor Crean also aims to improve the structure of existing postgraduate courses in three key areas:
• Part-time clinical MSc training courses aimed at primary care dental practitioners
• CPD and short skills calendar to provide events and skill improvements
• A range of exam preparation courses for students from across the world.

Professor Crean’s specialist training primarily lies within oral and maxillofacial surgery and he held the post of senior lecturer in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Cardiff School of Dentistry before being appointed as Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Queen Marys Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2003.

In 2005 he was appointed as consultant in oral maxillofacial surgery to North Glamorgan NHS Trust with NHS duties at Royal Glamorgan and Prince Charles Hospitals whilst holding an Honorary Professorship at University of Cardiff School of Dentistry.

Alongside his role in UCLan, Professor Crean is the Robert Bradlaw advisor in the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  He is also the Associate Clinical Professor for the MSc in Dental Implantology at the University of Warwick and is current President of the British Society of Oral Implantology.

Professor Crean holds numerous examinerships at home and abroad advising on the establishment of many dental undergraduate courses.
