Dentist suspended over poor English skills

A dentist working in Dumfries, Scotland, has been suspended on the grounds that his English skills did not reach the ‘required standard’.

Onofrio Brancato, who qualified in Bologna, Italy, in 1985, was practising at the DADDS dental surgery. NHS Dumfries and Galloway has suspended him following a set of restrictions imposed by the General Dental Council (GDC) in March, which oblige Mr Brancato to ‘place himself, and remain, under the supervision of an independent clinical assessor who must be approved by the GDC’.

A spokesman for NHS Dumfries and Galloway said: ‘This suspension is on the grounds that the practitioner has not been able to provide evidence of his attainment of the required standard of English language skills.

‘The suspension will remain in force pending the outcome of a final hearing’.

Mr Brancato’s conditions will be reviewed by the GDC in September.
