Dentists in Christmas appeal to aid homeless

Dentists are urgently needed to check and fix the teeth of the capital’s homeless this Christmas.

The check ups will be a part of the medical services on offer to London’s homeless people, many of whom may not have access to professional dental care for some time.

For more than 38 years, Crisis has opened Christmas centres across London from 23-30 December.

These centres offer vital companionship, hot meals and warmth, and a wide range of essential services that homeless people often miss out on. In 2010, the charity is expecting to welcome 2,500-plus homeless people off the streets across nine centres in central London – and organisers are looking for volunteers to help deliver a number of services, including a dental service.

The Crisis Christmas Dental Service is desperate for qualified volunteers to provide a range of routine dental treatments – check-ups, scale and polish, fillings and even extractions under local anaesthetic, as well as giving basic dental health advice and education.

All volunteers will meet at the rough sleepers centre at the start of each shift to be briefed and assigned to a team for their shifts.

Shifts run between 9am and 5.30pm and transport will be provided for those who need to travel to other centres.
