The newest innovations in interproximal cleaning

Philips, maker of the Sonicare toothbrush, unveiled the Philips Sonicare AirFloss at IDS 2011 this week.

Philips gave dental practitioners the chance to experience the difference themselves at the conference in Cologne, where they trialled Philips’ latest oral health care innovation.

Dental professionals often struggle to get patients to floss on a regular basis and the Sonicare AirFloss, with its breakthrough microburst technology, has been designed to address this problem by increasing ease of use while maximising interdental plaque removal and ultimately improving gum health.

During Philips consumer testing, 86% of patients found Sonicare AirFloss easier to use than floss [2] and Sonicare AirFloss removes up to 99% more plaque in-between teeth than brushing with a manual toothbrush alone. [1]

‘What’s unique about AirFloss is it’s a completely new category for oral care,’ says Dr Ian Peace from the University of Sheffield.

‘It works by using a rapid burst of air and water droplets to thoroughly fill up the interproximal area and force biofilm out. I’ve also found that Sonicare AirFloss has a noticeably positive effect on patient compliance. Patients often find flossing to be time-consuming and painful, but the AirFloss is both quick and painless and makes a real difference to the standard of patient’s overall oral health.’

At IDS 2011, dental practitioners will be able to experience the unique attributes of AirFloss for themselves. Besides its microburst technology, the Sonicare AirFloss has an ergonomic handle and a slim angled nozzle designed for easy access to all areas of the mouth – even the hard-to-reach back teeth. The point and one-button operation cleans the entire mouth in less than a minute [1], while using less than one teaspoon of water for two full cleaning sessions.

‘We understand the struggle that many dental practitioners experience in getting patients to regularly clean between their teeth,’’ says Erik Hollander, Sr, marketing director at Philips consumer lifestyle.

‘Sonicare AirFloss was developed to improve oral health with an easy-to-use device that you and your patients will love to use daily.’

Philips Sonicare is the number one recommended sonic toothbrush brand by dental professionals worldwide and is backed by more than 175 clinical trials.

The Philips Sonicare goal is to create and develop meaningful, easy-to-use oral health innovations that are designed to achieve and maintain oral health throughout a lifetime.
