GDC to appoint Lockyer replacement

The process to appoint a new council member to the General Dental Council is underway following the resignation of Alison Lockyer who quit as chair amid controversy in May.

The General Dental Council (GDC) is looking for someone to join the Council, replacing Alison Lockyer who resigned as chair and as a member of the Council amid rumours of divisions within the regulatory body.

At the time, Alison said: ‘It is with regret that I have decided to resign from my post as chair of the General Dental Council. It would not be appropriate at the moment for me to go into detail about my reasons for resigning suffice to say that, over the last few months, there have been issues that have caused me concern. I remain passionate about the importance of protecting the public through professional self regulation.’

The GDC says it is looking for a dental professional which may or may not be a dentist and so candidates from all registrant groups can apply.

The council is made up of 12 lay and 12 registrant members and the recruitment will be carried out by the Appointments Commission which is independent of the GDC.

The campaign opened Monday 27 June and finishes at midday on Thursday 28 July. Further information can be found on www.appointments.org.uk.

The GDC says: ‘To be successful in this role, you will be committed to protecting patients and the public, be able to demonstrate sound judgement, grasp complex information and be an effective communicator.  You will also enjoy working as part of a team with the GDC executive in the achievement of high performance standards.’

The GDC aims to confirm an appointment by the end of September.
