‘Molar Rollers’ get their teeth into charity cycle

A group comprising staff, students and friends of Dublin Dental Hospital’s bike club – the ‘Molar Rollers’ – are to take part in a sponsored cycle from Dublin to London this month [August].

The keen cyclists are hoping to raise awareness for head, neck and mouth cancer charities, as well as an impressive €50,000.

To date, no record has been found of an organised bike ride from Dublin to London having ever been attempted before.

The members of Dublin Dental University will take to their bikes Friday 19 August 2011 and the race will commence at 10.30am from Dublin Dental Hospital. On their journey they will visit Arklow, Rosslare, Pembroke, Carmarthen, Swansea, Cardiff, Bristol, Marlborough, Reading and finally arrive at Guys & St Thomas’ Dental Hospital on Saturday 27 August 2011.

There will be over 35 participants in the week-long charity cycle to London, who will be greeted by the St Thomas’ welcome party when they cross the finish line.

The objective is to raise funds to support further projects by the Irish Mouth Cancer Awareness Programme and other mouth cancer-related projects.

The money raised will be of great benefit to the head, neck and mouth cancer causes and will be used to fund a variety projects, which will be assessed by a board of trustees chaired by Mr John Hammond who will, in turn, agree and monitor the distribution of funds.

Through supporting these projects, the Dublin Dental University Hospital hopes to reduce the incidence of oral cancer by promoting its early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to raising professional and public awareness of cancer issues, the team hopes to influence health policy-makers to continue to improve the delivery of cancer services in Ireland.

All dentists at Dublin Dental University Hospital are trained to detect mouth cancer through an examination of the oral cavity – in fact the vast majority of patients with potentially malignant lesions are referred to the hospital by dentist and doctors alike.
