Dentist notches up 40 years in practice

A London dentist is celebrating this week having notched up 40 year in practice.

Dr Louis Guenin BDS LDS RCS, has been in practice at Holford Partners, Cavendish Square, London for four decades.

After graduating and taking up a hospital job for six months, Louis began work at Holford Partners, where he is now senior partner.

Dr Guenin says: ‘Forty years later dentistry has changed massively and the most exciting developments in the history of dentistry have taken place in these years.

‘When I qualified, we only had amalgams for posterior teeth, silicates for anterior teeth and gold if you could afford it – but only for the best.

‘No light curing machines, no hygienists to care for the periodontal treatment, no interdental brushes for cleaning, no electric toothbrushes – certainly no braces for orthodontic treatment and the placing of dental implants was out of the question (not even breast implants were dreamt of yet).

He adds: ‘Yellow teeth and the English horsey smile was the accepted thing 40 years ago.

‘How wonderful it is to perform 21st-century dentistry and have helped to remove the public fear of dentists.’
