Athens plays host to dental congress

More than 3,000 dentists, dental clinicians and researchers from around the world will meet in Athens next month to discuss some of the very latest techniques in implant therapy.

They are meeting at the 20th annual scientific congress of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) which will be held at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre from 12-15 October 2011.

Theme: Treatment planning in implant dentistry
The overall theme of the four day congress is treatment planning in implant dentistry.

‘Planning is an essential step prior to any patient’s treatment, dealing with two core issues: what is the goal of the treatment and how do we achieve it,’ say Professor Friedrich W Neukam and Professor Asterios Doukoudakis, chairmen of the EAO Scientific Committee, responsible for organising the content of the event.

‘Implant dentistry has evolved in a fast pace. Hence, it is crucial to match patients’ expectations and wishes to the latest ‘state of the art’ outcomes,’ says Professor Neukam.

‘In a next phase and in order to avoid the pitfalls of implant dentistry, the most suitable treatment should be matched to the desired goal and the patient. This enables clinicians to maximise quality management and clinical outcomes.’

Greek partnerships
As each year, the EAO association builds partnerships with local societies from the host country to strengthen the local ties. This year, the EAO works closely together with the Greek Society of Prosthodontists, the Greek Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Greek Society for Osseointegration and the Greek Society of Periodontology.

Together, they will offer a special Greek session on Saturday morning, 15 October, on clinical guidelines in prosthetic treatment planning in implant dentistry. Seven renowned Greek dentists will each highlight an important aspect of these clinical guidelines, with sessions on pre-prosthetic surgical planning; advanced problem solving: going back to the basics; and bruxism and implant rehabilitation.

Programme
The EAO brings together some of the world’s leading scientific experts to provide guidelines on and give research-based scientific advice about treatment planning. A world-class faculty of more than 80 invited speakers and moderators are participating.

Next to the numerous plenary sessions, the EAO organises multiple master classes, short oral communications, a poster presentation, the EAO Research Prize Competitions in Clinical and Basic Research, and a series of pre-congress parallel courses. The congress also serves as a platform for industry symposia.

This year nearly 500 abstracts were submitted for the Congress. Some will be presented at the meeting as short oral presentations or during the research competitions. A total of 405 have been chosen for poster display.

Alongside the Congress is one of Europe’s biggest implant dentistry trade exhibitions. The world’s leading companies and trade suppliers are represented with nearly 90 stands and 5 hospitality centres.

The EAO Congress exhibition has become a showcase for the latest in dental implant hardware and it is recognised as one of the premier events at which to launch new products.
