GDC chair candidates revealed

The General Dental Council (GDC) has confirmed two candidates are standing for election as chair of the GDC – dentist Kevin O’Brien and lay GDC member Derek Prentice.

The two candidates will attend hustings at Hallam Conference Centre at 44 Hallam Street,
London, on Wednesday 21 September.

Members of the public will be able to observe the candidates’ presentations which will be given in the public session between 1.30 and 2.00pm.

Only GDC Council members vote. The result is expected to be confirmed by 5.30pm.

The successful candidate will assume the role of chair at the council meeting on 22 September.

Kevin O’Brien
Qualified dentist Kevin O’Brien was born in Edinburgh and is now based in Manchester Dental School where he is Professor of Orthodontics. He was the dean of the dental school from 2004-2007 and associate dean of the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences from 2007-2010.

He has previously worked with the GDC in the roles of chair of the specialist dental education board and a member of the strategic review of undergraduate training.

Kevin trained as a dentist in Manchester and qualified in 1979 and spent four years in general dental practice. He then followed a hospital career in the UK and USA.
He was made consultant orthodontist in 1993 and professor of orthodontics in 1996.

His main research interests are clinical trials of orthodontic treatment methods that evaluate patient values.  His clinical interests are the treatment of children with severe orthodontic and craniofacial problems.

Derek Prentice
Derek Prentice is the managing director of the Customer First Consultancy Limited and previously  held a number of  executive appointments, including assistant director with the Consumers’ Association, president of the Bureau of European Consumer Unions, chief executive of the Association of London Authorities.
 
Derek has been a London borough councillor, a member of the governing body of St Thomas’ Medical School, a member of the governing body of King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry and a member of a number of health authorities mainly linked to King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.
 
Derek has also served as a trustee of King’s College NHS Trust Charitable Trust. He is currently a trustee of The British Home – which is an independent charity that provides specialised nursing and social care for people with long-term medical conditions and severe disabilities.
