Hygienists’ president welcomes OFT’s ‘direct access’

Sally Simpson, president of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy has welcomed recommendations for direct access to patient highlighted in the report into dentistry by the Office of Fair Trading.

She said: ‘The BSDHT is delighted to see the OFT report, Dentistry – an OFT market study, and welcomes the recommendations which the Society feels will increase patient choice and efficiency of personnel within the dental team.

‘The recommendations regarding direct access for dental hygienists and dental therapists are particularly welcomed, and recognise the role of our professional groups within the overall care of the patient.

‘We firmly believe that direct access will not be detrimental to patients as suggested by the General Dental Council and British Dental Association; rather that direct access will help dentistry move forward and embrace the successful model of care as employed in medicine allowing patients greater accessibility. ‘

She added: ‘As a Society we want to work with the General Dental Council to develop the recommendations from the report.  BSDHT has already provided evidence to the GDC’s Task and Finish Group, and expects to be fully involved in developing the direct access model for dental hygienists and dental therapists.’
