Generation game

Plandent Ltd (Claudius Ash) would like to wish Hertford-based Hudson Dental Care, a very happy 80th birthday. Hudson Dental Care is a family-owned practice, with four generations serving the local community since 1932.

Set up by Charles Hudson, after qualifying from Guy’s Hospital in 1921, some of Charles’ patients are still being seen today by David, Charles’ great grandson!

The family has adapted to many changes in dental care over the years – in the early days of the practice, Charles would find it perfectly normal to extract 80-90 teeth on a Saturday morning. Charles’ sons, William and Michael, tailored the practice in response to the introduction of the NHS in 1948, frequently working 12-hour days, 7 days a week to keep up with demand, especially for dentures. With the help of Claudius Ash, William’s son, John, renovated Charles’ surgery with the latest modern equipment in the 1960’s, when seated and four-handed dentistry came into play.

Hudson Dental has been a stable part of the community for 80 years, and may well continue to do so for another 80 years, if David’s (John’s son) four- and two-year-old sons decide to follow in their dad’s footsteps!

To learn more about the family, the British Dental Association is holding an exhibition at its London Museum between May and August 2012, showcasing photographs and historic instruments and equipment.

To celebrate, Hudson Dental Care is having an open day at the practice at 23 Bull Plain, Hertford, on 22 June 2012 from 12-5pm. Attendees can find out more about how different dentistry was back in Charles’ era, view historic equipment, receive exclusive special treatment offers, get yourself a goodie bag, and children can enter a logo design competition. To attend, please call 01992 505 828.
