Dental charity on TV

Television show BBC Breakfast featured an exclusive interview with Bridge2Aid (B2A) founder Dr Ian Wilson last weekend in which he announced the launch of the British dental charity’s first pilot project in Rwanda.

Ian will shortly travel to Rwanda at the invite of the Ministry of Health, visiting health clinics set up by the Survivors Fund (SURF), a UK-based organisation supporting survivors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. SURF works in conjunction with Project Umubano, the social action programme of the UK Conservative Party.

As he explained to the BBC, he will be exploring the possibility of setting up the new pilot project across clinics that SURF has set up for local survivor’s organisations. Rwanda is a country with only 11 dentists to serve its entire nation of 11 million people.

B2A has been working in Tanzania – one of the world’s poorest countries – since 2004, when it was set up by Ian Wilson and his wife Andie.

Taking British dental volunteers to train local clinic officers in basic healthcare skills, it has helped provide access to emergency dental treatment to almost two million people.

B2A has volunteer spaces available for dentists, nurses, hygienists and therapists this year and next.
