Direct access survey – they need you!

A group of dental hygienists are hoping to present a research poster on direct access at the International Federation of Dental Hygiene conference in South Africa next year. This research will present the issues surrounding direct access experienced in the UK.

But… they need your help.

Earlier this year, the Direct Access Action Group (DAAG) – formed by key DH&Ts – worked together to supply  information to the Office of Fair Trading who were investigating direct access to dental care within the UK.

This group strongly believe that increasing access to dental services in this way is in the best interests of patients.

The DCPs are now hoping to galvanise fellow DH&Ts into influencing the future of their profession on an international level.

They are seeking colleagues’ views on treatment planning and diagnosis and plan to collate the information originally submitted to the OFT along with fresh responses from the online survey of DH&Ts.

The 19th International Symposium on Dental Hygiene takes place on 14-17 August 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Christina Chatfield, a member of DAAG, explained: ‘We are keen to  present  the UK’s initial experience of direct access and need as many DH&Ts as possible to get involved.’

Christina Chatfield, along with Sarah Murray, Elaine Tilling, Margaret Ross, Amanda Gallie and Dave Bridges, formed the Direct Access Action Group in time for the release of the OFT’s report earlier this year.

The group is now seeking help of all DH&Ts in collating evidence of their current perceptions of the direct access issue.
