Dental practice design: Heart of it

A world-class dental facility has opened in central London. Fittingly located in the heart of the medical district, the new multi-disciplinary centre of excellence is entirely dedicated to the health, well-being and rejuvenation of the mouth as well as facial care.

The new centre extends over an expansive six floors of a Grade II listed building on Harley Street – an area already renowned for medical excellence – to provide access to world class dentistry and facial rejuvenation from some of the most experienced, skillful and sought after specialists in their respective fields.

One of the defining factors of which The Harley Street Dental Group was most emphatic when putting together the team, was its adherence to an exacting selection process.

At the outset, co-founders Dr Mark Hughes and partner Dr Adam Thorne drew up a plan to people the centre with only the finest clinicians and best trained DCP team to help patients with their oral health care and cosmetic dentistry needs. As a result, they have assembled 19 of the best dental experts in the UK, including six of the most decorated cosmetic dentists in the country, all of whom are leading exponents in their various fields.

Although there are around 450 dental professionals practising in the area, most operate from a single room or a shared facility and have to refer onto colleagues to enable them to treat every patients’ needs.

By contrast, 52 Harley Street’s clinical experts are able to provide possibly every form of general, specialist and aesthetic dentistry under one roof without the need for referral. The clinic is able to provide oral surgery, endodontics, orthodontics, periodontology and every form of restorative dentistry. They can also assess patients for oral cancer and even have a speech therapist available for consultation.

Indeed such is their combined skill-set that the specialists at 52 Harley Street will be holding monthly Quality Circle CPD events including master classes and study clubs, and offering mentoring throughout the year to pass on their skills and knowledge to their colleagues in the area. They will also be providing a forum for dental companies to showcase the latest equipment and technologies.

The clinic has a high-spec, contemporary interior – which has been more than two and half years in the planning and execution – making it one of the most sophisticated facilities in the area.

In a very unusual move, the centre was developed in collaboration with the Howard de Walden Estate which manages the district and has been fitted out with the most technically advanced surgical and clinical equipment available. Facilities include dedicated surgical and digital radiological suites and state of the art sterilisation rooms which far exceed the quality standards demanded by the authorities.

Because it is so well-specced, 52 Harley Street is able to extend its provision to other dental practices in the area which are less well equipped to comply with the latest CQC regulations; offering a mobile sterilisation service as well as access to its radiology department. The radiology suite is equipped with a CT scanner, Itero digital scanner and Cephalometric scanner as well as the providing conventional radiography services. Generated results are sent direct to the dental professional’s computer.

A membership scheme is available with benefits including access to the radiological and sterlisation services; priority appointments for patients; priority sign up for events and educational meetings. The membership is free for the first year and offers significant discounts to dental professionals.
