Since direct access got the green light in May, some DCPs are now permitted to plan treatment for patients for all skills included in their scope of practice (what they are trained and competent to do), without a prescription from a dentist or the patient having to see a dentist first.
What does this REALLY mean for hygienists/therapists and how can they ensure they stay professionally protected and work within your scope of practice?
A new course – Your Guide to Direct Access – is to provide delegates with the necessary information and skills required to practise safely and effectively in the best interest of your patients.
The MUST–ATTEND key session is presented by Joe Ingham (dento-legal adviser for Dental Proteection), who will explain what has and has not changed with direct access, diagnosis beyond your scope of practice and when to refer to a dentist, and what the GDC expects from those who choose to practice in this way.
JULIE ROSSE, president of the BSDHT and BAL CHANA, president of the BADT, will also be present to deliver advice and answers to your specific questions in our panel discussion.
There will also be limited spaces for two hands-on guides – direct restorations by Dr John Rafelt, and dental instrument sharpening.
There will be a chance to build new skills or hone your techniques with these and a selection of hot-topic lectures on Decontamination & HTM 01-05, Mechanical Plaque Removal, and Successful Whitening: A Hygiene and Therapist Perspective.
Speakers include DH&T Melonie Prebble on successful tooth whitening, DH&T Madalyne Tucker in mechanical plaque removal, Peter Gibbons on decontamination and HTM 01-05, and Laura Horton on enhancing your communication skills for direct access patients.
This also provides a chance to network with like-minded hygienists, therapists and other DCPs.
All lectures are provided by industry experts to ensure you leave feeling confident to undertake all the duties within your scope of practice.
