Spreading the word

Mouth Cancer Foundation consultant, Nicki Rowland, is announced as the keynote speaker at two of the Health Days at Hull College Group’s Fresher’s events on Wednesday 11 and Thursday 26 September.

Thousands of students from all Hull College campuses including Queens Gardens, Park Street, Cannon Street and the KC Stadium will hear Nicki talk about the charity’s latest life-saving initiative, the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme.

Nicki who is also practice manager at Perfect 32 in Beverley, East Yorkshire, has been instrumental in helping the charity set up the initiative which calls for every dental practice in the UK to be carrying out a thorough head and neck examination as part of regular check-ups.

The scheme is a ‘Two minutes to save a life’ screening protocol, which is a 10-point checklist that every dentist should be able to include in their routine examinations in order to increase early detection rates and save lives.

Group sales manager for Hull College Group, James Peacock, said: 'We are delighted Nicki is able to talk to our fresher’s about Mouth Cancer helping to raise awareness among our student population.

'This initiative demonstrates the care we have not just about the fresher’s academic studies, but how we support our learners to lead well informed, well balanced personal lives. With Nicki’s passion and enthusiasm and our support of the charity in their efforts to promote earlier detection of mouth cancer we are sure many individuals within high risk groups will benefit from the awareness raising.'
