Unregistered dentist fined

The General Dental Council (GDC) has successfully prosecuted a non-registrant for unlawfully holding himself out as practising, or being prepared to practise dentistry, when he was not registered.

At the end of February 2013, London's Excel centre hosted a trade show called The Professional Beauty Exhibition. Among the exhibitors was a company called Whitening Products, which operates out of Edinburgh. The company provides tooth whitening training and tooth whitening services. Mr Mohammed was on the stand and when spoken to by GDC investigators unlawfully held himself out as being prepared to practise dentistry.

On 21 November 2013, Nabeel Mohammed was found guilty, in his absence at Thames Magistrates’ Court, of unlawfully holding himself as practising, or being prepared to practise dentistry, contrary to sections 38 (1) and (2) of the Dentists Act 1984.

Mr Mohammed was fined £1,500, ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge and full costs to the GDC of £1639.34.

He claimed to be registered with the GDC, but when he applied for registration in 2011 he was refused on the grounds that he was not suitably qualified.

By law all dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with the GDC to work in the UK. This is to ensure only appropriately qualified and skilled dental professionals are part of the dental team looking after patients.
