State-of-the-art dental school opened

The £800,000 project, in conjunction with Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, saw 21 state-of-the-art dental chairs installed along with new dental surgery equipment on floor 26 in the Tower Wing at Guy's Hospital, London Bridge.

The refurbishment, part of a continued programme of capital investment by the trust, was carried out over 12 weeks.

The team overcame considerable logistical challenges, including re-fitting a large outpatient clinic with minimal intrusion into the daily running of a busy dental hospital and education centre.

The open-plan clinical outpatient suite gives students unprecedented opportunity to use cutting-edge technology and develop their clinical and operative skills.

Professor Avijit Banerjee, head of conservative and minimally invasive dentistry at the dental institute, says: 'This updated world-class centre helps engender and reinforce the team-care approach to helping patients manage their dental problems, and to maintain long term oral and dental health.

'The quality of workmanship from the fitting team and the helpful interaction between them and the clinical staff ensured the realisation of a superb facility, that now rivals most in the world in terms of the quality components and design.'

The clinic refurbishment coincided with a significant modernisation and re-design of the BDS curriculum at the dental institute, along with the method of delivery of clinical education in restorative dentistry.

Vertically integrated clinics see students from all years working together as a team with cross-over education from experienced teachers across all restorative disciplines (conservative dentistry, periodontology, endodontics and prosthodontics).

This enables the undergraduate experience to fully embrace the comprehensive patient-centred dental care model, from initial care planning stages through to recall and review of care provided.

The clinic was formally opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the dean of the dental institute, Professor Dianne Rekow (pictured left), the Guy's and St Thomas' dental clinical director, Mr Eric Whaites (pictured right), director of the integrated clinical care unit on floor 26, Professor Avijit Banerjee (pictured left-centre) and dental sister, Jane Soutter (pictured right-centre).
