Dentists should have their say on contract reform

The British Dental Association (BDA) has urged dentists after a series of reports were published recently about the progress of contract reforms.

Dentists specifically are being asked for their views on how they should be paid in a changed system and whether the remuneration approach should involve capitation, activity or a blend.

Dentists' views on the clinical philosophy (primary care pathways), the measurement of quality and outcomes are also being sought by the Department of Health (DH).

These and other questions about the practical implications of the current direction of travel for practices and patients are contained in the four short reports published recently.

Dr John Milne, the chair of the BDA's General Dental Practice Committee, said: 'These are interesting and useful reports and I urge all those with a stake in the future of NHS dentistry in England to read them.

'Dentists will have to implement any new system that is adopted by the Department of Health, so it's essential we use every opportunity we can to influence the shape of that system.

'I can't stress enough how important it is that dentists make their views and concerns known to the department, it's our best chance of making sure that the planned prototypes are as useful as possible.'

The BDA will submit its response to the DH reports before the deadline closes on 31 July.
