GDC consultation on indemnity

IndemnityThe General Dental Council (GDC) has launched a consultation on a draft for new rules regarding registrants’ indemnity arrangements.

The new arrangements would cover the information dentists and dental care professionals applying for registration or restoration, or seeking to renew their registration, will be required to give the GDC about their indemnity arrangements.

The requirement for GDC registrants to have indemnity has been in place for many years.

It is set out in the Standards for the Dental Team as something that is expected of GDC registrants.

The consultation is open from 8 December 2014 – 9 January 2015 and you can respond here.

The GDC’s priority is that patients who suffer damage should be able to recover any money they might be entitled to through compensation, in the event of a successful claim.

The GDC is consulting on proposed rules in the following areas:

  • The circumstances under which the GDC would be able to ask someone applying for registration, restoration or seeking to renew their registration, for further information about their proposed indemnity arrangements, what information should be provided and the timescales for doing so
  • A requirement for registrants who cease to be covered to inform the GDC and the timescales for doing so
  • The circumstances in which the GDC could seek further information from registrants regarding their indemnity arrangements, what information should be provided and the timescales for doing so.
