The BDA has raised concerns over the GDC extending its remit

Concerns have been raised over the GDC’s attempt to extend its remit beyond its current duties.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has recently proposed to have a role in ‘improving the quality of dental care’, to extend the role of the Dental Complaints Service (DCS), to consider the development of ‘quality metrics’ in dentistry, and to ‘enable patients to find out more about their dental professionals from the register’.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has raised concerns that the GDC is reaching beyond its remit and has asked the regulatory body to concentrate on improving its Professional Standards Authority performance, keeping costs down for those it regulates, and listen to feedback from the dental profession to improve relationships.

‘It looks like the dental regulator is attempting to extend its remit at the expense of registrants,’ Mick Armstrong, chair of the BDA, said.

‘Patients and practitioners deserve a regulator that’s both efficient and effective, which understands and focuses on its day job, as set out in law.

‘The GDC’s inexorable mission creep continues to take us further from both of those objectives.’
