Perioblast claims to be able to eradicate the bacteria causing peri-implantitis and periodontitis

A revolutionary new treatment claims to be able to eradicate periodontal disease in all patients.

A study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, used microbiologically-guided laser irradiation of periodontal pockets, in conjunction with scaling and root planing, to eradicate advanced periodontal disease in 100% of the 2,683 patients.

‘Currently periodontal disease is managed rather than treated,’ lead researcher and clinician, Dr Francesco Martelli, said.

‘Existing methods are ineffective for wiping out the disease and long-term treatment often results in the unnecessary removal of teeth.

‘We have developed a treatment that can eradicate the pathogens permanently.

‘Perioblast is a breakthrough that gives patients the chance to save their teeth, regenerate bone and ultimately be pain free.’

No reason to suffer tooth loss

Dr Martelli claims that the treatment, called Perioblast, can also help to optimise the use of antibiotics in dentistry.

Traditionally the current practice is to treat periodontal disease with antibiotics, invasive surgery or tooth extraction.

However, Perioblast can offer patients a less invasive and highly precise approach, with each patient requiring at least four sessions of laser treatment to create a stable microbiological shift in their oral ecosystem.

‘Now that Perioblast is available there is no reason for anyone in the UK to suffer tooth loss, no matter their age, gender or lifestyle,’ Dr Martelli said.

‘Periodontal disease is much more than an oral health problem, it’s an overall health time bomb.’

Periodontitis and peri-implantitis

Dr Martelli claims this new research could help to improve periodontitis and peri-implantitis in implant patients.

At the launch of a new IMI Clinic in Leeds, Dr Martelli presented case studies of patients who had received the treatment and shown bone regeneration around implants.

At the end of the treatment, 100% of patients showed improvement in periodontal probing depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and suppuration (PUS), with 13,550 pockets being checked for up to 12-24 months.
