Supporting good hand hygiene

Support good hand hygiene through social media on Thursday 5 May

Dental professionals are being asked to take to social media to support good hand hygiene.

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and Association of Clinical Oral Microbiologists (ACOM) are calling for the support at 8pm on Thursday 5 May after saying they would post the message ‘hand hygiene supports safe dental care’ on their social media sights.

The call has come about after it was found that more than 4 million patients are affected by healthcare-acquired infections every year in Europe, costing around 7 billion (£5.5 billion) in additional healthcare and direct financial losses.

‘Dental patients are in your hands, so always check what’s on your hands,’ Dr Mick Horton, FGDP(UK) dean, and Dr Melanie Wilson, chair of ACOM, said.

‘Don’t spread infections, but do spread the word – sign up to our Thunderclap today, then share the link with your colleagues.’

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says dentists have an important part to play in preventing the spread of infections, and is promoting the simple act of hand-washing through a printable poster for dental surgeries called Your 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.
