Restorative Dental Practice – hands-on from day one

M PatelDr Patel explains why the UCL Eastman Dental Institute Restorative Dental Practice programmes are so beneficial.

The Restorative Dental Practice programmes at UCL Eastman Dental Institute (EDI) cover fundamental topics such as treatment planning, occlusion, aesthetics, endodontics, periodontics and much more.

Dr Mahul Patel successfully completed the MSc in restorative dental practice and now teaches at EDI while continuing to work in practice and in hospital.

‘Teaching and supervising at the institute is my way of “giving back” because of my experience studying there,’ Dr Patel said. ‘I think the graduate students benefit because I joined the faculty fresh from finishing the EDI programmes myself and it’s nice to be able to liaise with them and understand exactly what they’re going through.’

‘Hands-on from day one’

The Restorative Dental Practice programme is a part-time degree, enabling delegates to continue their work in practice whilst developing their careers.

‘The programme is structured in three tiers, one can exit after the first year with a certificate, or can continue another two years and exit with a diploma,’ Dr Patel continued. ‘An additional year undertaking a research project after the diploma level will acquire an MSc qualification.’

Dr Patel had been qualified for over three years when he first began the programme.

He said: ‘I was very early in my practising career when I started and by the time I left I had spent eight years working in practice. The programme did a lot for me in terms of helping to develop my knowledge base and mature my clinical skill set.

‘The advantages of the Restorative Dental Practice programme were clear from the very first day: everything taught at EDI has an element that can be applied into practice straight away. It’s hands-on from day one.’

Having achieved his restorative dental practice MSc, Dr Patel was able to treat a broader range of cases at a more advanced level.

‘I was also able to treat patients within my practice on an internal referral system from my colleagues whose cases required further comprehensive treatment planning,’ he says.

Improved delivery

The full-time MSc in Conservative Dentistry programme at EDI only accepts a small number of students but having already proven himself as an Eastman student, Dr Patel had an advantage for the competitive entry system. Here he completed the MSc degree awarded with distinction and the class post-graduate prize.

Studying at UCL Eastman Dental Institute has also had a long term impact on Dr Patel’s career: ‘As a result of the training, my knowledge base, clinical and technical skills were enhanced. I’m able to approach treatments with a better understanding and an improved delivery, all of which is beneficial for my patients.’

‘I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the training programmes at UCL Eastman Dental Institute.’
