Sara Hurley, CDO for England, visited Kimberworth Park Dental Practice in Rotherham as part of a series of regional visits.

The aim of the visits is so the chief dental officer (CDO) can see how dental care professionals are delivering oral health treatments and preventive programmes.

Kimberworth Park Dental Practice (KPDP) is one of south Yorkshire’s largest practices, with seven surgeries and more than 25,000 patients, 99% of which are NHS.

‘It was good to witness the huge efforts the Kimberworth Practice is putting into delivering an effective oral health treatment and prevention plan for patients in the north west of Rotherham,’ Sara Hurley said.

‘This includes fluoride application by dentists and trained nurses, school educational visits and prescriptions of fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to high risk patients.

‘In all, delivering high quality, personalised dental care.’

‘Privilege’

KPDP was appointed in 2008 a postgraduate deanery to train foundation dentists from neighbouring counties.

The centre currently has three trainers who hold postgraduate qualifications and previously taught undergraduate students.

‘It has been a privilege to play host to Sara, the chief dental officer, at our practice,’ Ronan McManus, a partner at Kimberworth Park Dental Practice, said.

‘It was an opportunity for her to see first-hand the work our whole practice team is involved with, including our specialist NHS oral surgery service and how we are training newly qualified dentists.’
