The British Society for Advanced Dentistry (BSAD) has appointed a new president, Dr Peter Sanders, whose two-year term was confirmed at the BSAD conference in Cardiff.

The BSAD, formerly known as British Society for General Dental Surgery (BSGDS), was formed in 1983 and reformed in 2015, when the society merged with the implant diploma (FGDP) alumni. The BSAD now provides an academic forum for general dental practitioners who have achieved postgraduate diplomas in different disciplines to develop and exchange ideas. The society offers opportunities for cross discipline discussion, audit and peer review of provided treatments, as well as opportunities for active training and development of younger graduates who commit to further study.

Challenge tradition

‘I am humbled by the position of president of the society but also driven by the passion for our profession,’ says new president, Dr Sanders. ‘This role is a massive privilege for me, and I will do all I can during my term to infuse a new generation with our ideals.

‘I hope that as a society, we can employ our unique mix and knowledge to lobby for a register of suitably trained, mentored, dental implantologists with demonstrable audit and peer review. We should also educate general dental practitioners and dental teams so that they understand the technology, feel competent and empowered to engage in maintenance and monitoring and develop a monitoring index similar to the BPE to give them the tools to do so.

‘These themes should drive the BSAD committee over the coming two years and form the theme of the next conference. We must also focus on the fact that, if we stick with tradition, we will wither on the vine. To grow the society, we must attract young members and to do that we need to project our own enthusiasm and constantly challenge tradition.’

As well as the president of the BSAD, Dr Sanders is programme director for the implant diploma FGDP at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, chief examiner for the European MSc at King Juan Carlos University Madrid, and the clinical director of his own dental implant centre, Dental Confidence Ltd in Southampton.
