Brexit on the programme at Consultant Orthodontist Group meeting

What impact will Brexit have on healthcare and on dentistry in particular?

One of the people who is best qualified to answer this question is the MP Hilary Benn and he will be speaking on that very topic at the March meeting of the British Orthodontic Society’s Consultants’ symposium.

A Labour stalwart and a ‘Remainer’, Benn chairs the parliamentary select committee set up to scrutinise government policy on the UK’s exit from the EU.

The title of his talk is The Challenge of Brexit. He is also MP for Leeds Central and the meeting of the BOS Consultant Orthodontists’ Group is being held at the Leeds Armouries, home to the national collection of arms and armour.

Respected speakers

Another speaker at the meeting on March 1st and 2nd likely to prove a big draw is the statistician Martin Bland. He is known for his work on medical measurement and has co-written some of the most cited papers ever in the field of medical statistics.

Four highly respected orthodontists are also presenting. They are Bill Shaw, who will be reflecting on cleft care, Tony Ireland, delivering the Ballard lecture and Jonathan Sandler and Jayne Harrison, speakers in the education section.

Kevin Lewis, the former Dental Protection Dental director, will discuss the Long Arm of the Law, Andrew Keeling will address 3D scanning, Stephen Fayle will speak on children, caries and commissioning and Nick Grey and Kevin Seymour will give a joint presentation on Dilemmas in Restorative Care. The symposium is rounded off by James Barnett, a former Rugby player and a vicar whose topic is ‘There may be gnashing of teeth.’.

The last COG meeting was in London last year and was also organised by Claire Bates, lead clinician for orthodontics at Leeds School of Dentistry. The meeting earned overwhelmingly positive feedback with delegates appreciating the inspiring mix of clinical and non-clinical speakers.
