Judging the Awards

These prestigious awards feature an esteemed panel of experts. Chaired by Amarjit Gill, the judges will study all entries and compile a short list and a winner for each category.


  • Amarjit Gill

    Amarjit Gill

    Amarjit is the Chairman of the Dentistry Awards judging panel. He has a thriving private practice in Nottingham which focuses on preventive procedures and offers cosmetic dentistry as well.

    He has worked within the Dental Industry as a Business Development Consultant since 1995 when he first started with Ivoclar Vivadent. Currently he is a Key Opinion Leader with Discuss Dental, Ondine Biomedical and Chief dental Adviser to Philips Healthcare. In 2010 Amarjit was voted one of the top five most influential dentists in the UK by readers of Dentistry magazine and and is previous president of the BDA where he had been on the executive board since 2000, including a stint as Deputy Chairman. Since his BDA Presidency, one of his stated aims has been to begin developing a more integrated profession, with a closer and more structured way of co-operation between the trade, hygienists, nurses and therapists.

  • Amjad Malik

    Amjad Malik

    Amjad runs a highly successful, mostly private aesthetic practice in north-east London/Essex borders, with his wife Moona (who is also a judge).

    Amjad has studied widely in both the UK and USA with the likes of John Kois, the Dawson Academy, Hilt Tatum, and the Aesthetic Advantage. As well as acting as advisors for Independent Seminars, Amjad and Moona are an extremely proactive, forward-thinking team, and are a real asset to the panel.

  • David Dunlop

    David Dunlop

    David has a particular interest in prosthodontics. He qualified from the University of Dundee in 1978. He has enjoyed a wide-ranging career, ranging from community dentistry in Tayside to a variety of hospital and general practice posts in Belfast and Glasgow.

    In general practice he has been a vocational trainer and since 2006 has worked at the Berkeley Dental Clinic, a private referral practice in Glasgow with an emphasis on CAD/CAM dentistry. David has an interest in implant prosthodontics and in treatment and management of occlusion, and writes regularly for Dentistry Scotland.

  • Chris Potts

    Chris Potts

    Chris has more than 30 years of experience in dentistry. He has spent over half his career working on the corporate and business side, acting as advisor for both UK and international companies.

    These include BUPA, Virgin and Boots, where he spent almost 10 years as a director in both their Dentalcare and Healthcare divisions. Chris is currently the dental lead for UK Specialist Hospitals and is the immediate past president for the British Dental Health Foundation, where he is still on the board of trustees.

  • Seema Sharma

    Seema Sharma

    Seema Sharma is CEO of the Smile Impressions group of practices and founder of the first digital online solution for CQC compliance, effectively building a "virtual dental practice manager" online.

    Her practice management company Dentabyte Ltd delivers diploma courses in practice management, CPD for CQC workshops and a wide range of professional services to help practices future proof their practices by combining commercial success with compliance conundrums. She established The Sharma Foundation, which helps underprivileged communities in India and East London, after visiting Mumbai with Channel 4 to make Slumdog Secret Millionaire.

  • Ian Peace

    Ian Peace

    Ian is a GDC-registered specialist in periodontics and runs a fully private specialist periodontic/ implant/restorative referral practice in Nottingham.

    He is a well known lecturer at national and international dental meetings and writes regular articles in the dental press on periodontic, implant and business related subjects. He loves rugby and is currently studying for an Open University Degree in History.

  • Moona Malik

    Moona Malik

    Moona runs a highly successful, mostly private aesthetic practice in north-east London/Essex borders, with her husband Amjad (who is also a judge).

    Moona is a highly experienced practice manager, and is very passionate and involved in many aspects of dentistry. As well as acting as advisors for Independent Seminars, Amjad and Moona are an extremely proactive, forward thinking team, and are a real asset to the panel.

  • Julian English

    Julian English

    With more than 15 years of dental publishing experience behind him, Julian is a well-known face in the profession, attending many events throughout the world every year.

    Group executive editor for award winning publishing house FMC, Julian is the editor of Dentistry magazine as well as several other journals. He is a member of the editorial committee for the British Dental Trade Association and has been busy in recent years extending FMC’s range of international dental titles.

  • Tracey Bell

    Tracey Bell

    Having qualified as a dentist in 1993, Tracey opened her first practice directly after vocational training and has never looked back.

    She opened an NHS practice with no money, utilising her business acumen to raise cash before converting a 20,000 patient group to private practice and also opening a chain of practices focusing on areas such as non-surgical, lasers, cosmetic and surgical procedures. She is now the CEO of a group of successful companies including SmileScription, a designer of dental products.

  • Melonie Prebble

    Mel Prebble

    A member of the dental industry for 20 years, Mel qualified as a dental hygienist in 1995, she diversified her business into practice management consulting offering a range of in-house management and clinical dental strategies to help practices reach their ultimate goals.

    Mel is a national speaker in the field of Comprehensive Care, Team Building and Dental Hygiene related topics and a regular contributor to dental journals. Mel sits on the Dentistry Awards Judging Panel and is past Chair of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy London Region. In recent years Mel attained a Life Coaching Diploma and is founder of Sound Performance Coaching www.soundperformancecoaching.co.uk. Her key strengths focus on team development, personal growth and empowerment.

  • Paul Langmaid

    Paul Langmaid

    Paul qualified in Cardiff Dental School in 1975 and following House Officer posts in Oral Surgery and Paedodontics entered General Practice in Cornwall where he worked for 10 years. That was followed by 6 years as the Senior/Chief Dental officer on the West Indian island of Anguilla.

    On return to the UK Paul took a variety of clinical roles in South Wales including GDP in Cardiff, SDO in the South Glamorgan Health Authority CDS and as Clinical Assistant in Oral Surgery and Orthodontics in the then Mid Glamorgan Health Authority. In 1993 he was appointed, after an open competition, SDO in the Dental Division of the Welsh Office and subsequently Chief Dental Officer for Wales. Paul retired from that post in December 2010, but remains on the Dental Register and Specialist List for DPH. Since retiring Paul has taken up two non-executive director posts with Bizitalk and Prompt Payer, the fastest growing ethical trading register in Europe, where he brings his experience of national government and the NHS to the boardroom.

  • Timothy Ives

    Tim Ives

    Tim spent 22 years in the Royal Air Force and was involved in training, mentoring and auditing clinicians in Hong Kong, Cyprus, Germany, New Zealand, Holland and UK.

    He now practices as a hygienist for Oasis in Melton Mowbray and at the Market Place Dental Practice in Uppingham. Out of the clinic he is a Practice Advisor for Apolline, is on the honorary editorial board of Premium Practice Dentistry and Dental Hygiene & Therapy. He is a mentor for hygiene therapists in the Philips Transitional Support programme and a Key Opinion Leader for Philips Health and Wellbeing. He has a passion for minimally invasive dentistry (MID), co-runs an MID based web site: www.dentalvillage.co.uk, lectures and consults internationally on caries management. Tim is a serial student, currently undertaking a PGCE, he is on a mission to change-manage continuing professional development to a non-directive student centred action research approach.

  • Jayendra Patel

    Jayendra Patel

    Winner of Best Young Dentist for NE - The Dentistry Awards 2010 Jayendra is one of the partners at the clinic. He is currently completing his MSc in Oral Surgery and is a Vocational Trainer for newly qualified dentists.

    He is also an examiner for The Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow for their MFDS examinations. Having graduated from the Leeds Dental Institute in 2004 with Honors Jay went on to complete his membership examinations (MFDS) in 2006 and his Membership in the Joint Dental Faculties (MJDF) in 2010, both at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Jay has published research in the prestigious British Dental Journal (BDJ) and Dental Update. His past experience includes working as a Senior House Officer in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield and at The University Dental Hospital of Manchester.

  • Ahmed Al-ani

    Ahmed Al-Ani

    Ahmed Al-Ani graduated from The Leeds Dental Institute in 2004 and is currently undertaking his MSc in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry at Manchester University.

    In 2008 he joined forces with Dr Patel to renovate a Grade II listed building to house his brainchild “Clarendons”, a high end dental practice and specialist referral centre which has grown from 2 surgeries to 9 surgeries in the space of just 4 years winning multiple awards along the way. Dr Al-Ani carries out most of the private general and challenging cosmetic work at the practice.He is recognised as being behind much of the growth and continued success of the practice.

The 2012 awards ceremony will be held on the 7th December at the stunning art deco cinema Athena, Leicester. The 2012 awards are set to be more glamorous and magical than ever before. The evening will consist of a champagne reception, a three course meal, the awards ceremony and music to get you up dancing. By Rail

Athena is within 5 minutes walking distance of Leicester train Station. Direct rail routes go to London (St Pancras), Birmingham and Sheffield.

By Road

Sat-Nav users should enter LE1 1QD as the postcode for Athena.

From the North

(M1 J22). Follow A50 into Leicester. Turn left onto A46. At the roundabout take 3rd exit (A5630). Continue straight ahead untill Ravensbridge Drive. Turn right onto St Margarets Way then left onto Burleys Way. From here follow directions to Athena.

From the South

Take the A5460 into Leicester. At Fosse Park roundabout take 2nd exit (Narborough Road). Continue to the crossroads with King Richards Road. At St Nicholas Circle turn left onto Vaughan Way, which becomes Burleys Way. Continue along Burleys Way, over Burleys flyover onto St Matthews Way. At roundabout take the 4th exit (Humberstone Road), then turn left into Rutland Street. Athena is on your left.
