PerioChip is a unique biodegradable chip containing 36% chlorhexidine digluconate in a sustained release matrix which is placed in the periodontal pocket following root surface debridement (RSD). Described as a ‘first line’ treatment for pockets of more than 5mm, it’s a simple, easy way to keep treatment sites clear of subgingival pathogenic bacteria. PerioChip is clinically effective at eliminating 99% of subgingival bacteria and suppresses bacterial flora for up to 11 weeks after the patient leaves the surgery.
Within two hours of placement, PerioChip creates a high concentration of chlorhexidine digluconate within the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), the GCF acts as a natural reservoir providing free circulation throughout the pocket whilst maintaining the minimum inhibitory concentration level required to supress bacterial growth for seven days.
When combined with routine root surface debridement, results from a double blind, randomised clinical study indicate that PerioChip is twice as effective at improving pocket depths compared to RSD alone.1
A two year multi centre clinical study concluded that when placed every three months as part of a periodontal treatment programme, almost three quarters of patients reported an improvement in pocket depth reduction of >2mm.2
PerioChip can be kept at room temperature, takes less than one minute to place and requires no special equipment to administer. PerioChip gradually biodegrades over a 7 day period, so no return visit for the patient is necessary to have the dental insert removed. With oral hygiene education a normal recall routine can then be implemented to maintain patient progress.
Next time your patient has periodontal pocketing >5mm consider the PerioChip periodontal treatment programme for effective continuous on-going treatment as an alternative to antibiotics whilst offering clinically better outcomes when compared to RSD alone.
