The 2008 National Adult Dental Health Survey has been postponed a year.

Chief Dental Officer Barry Cockcroft confirmed the position during his address at the British Dental Association (BDA) conference.

He promised that it will now take place in 2009 – a year late – due to a 'departmental reorgansiation'.

The survey has taken place every 10 years since 1968.

It reflects the state of the adult nation's oral health and is conducted by the Office of National Statistics and some dental schools.

Critics suggest the government has opted for the delay due to the lack of access created by the April 2006 contract – and the effects on adult dental health because of this.

Barry Cockcroft will be writing to the Chair of the BDA's executive, Susie Sanderson, to confirm the postponement.
