The fifth annual premier symposium was held on Saturday 3 December at King’s College and it was again a full house. Over 350 delegates packed the lecture theatre at this year’s event. For many it has become something of a Christmas tradition, with over half the delegates having attended previous symposiums. Organised jointly by Dental Protection Ltd and Schülke & Mayr UK Ltd, the event is recognised as a leading forum for dental risk management, cross infection control and health and safety issues. The premier awards which support both undergraduate and postgraduate research into these topics were presented to this year’s winners during the programme, as well as the winners for a new category for DCPs. The day was chaired by Dr Kevin Lewis, dental director of Dental Protection who commented, ‘We are delighted that The premier symposium has developed such a big following amongst dentists and dental care professionals. It is very satisfying to see so many colleagues returning year after year but the calibre of speakers and relevance of the topics are an irresistible combination’. The premier symposium 2005 featured the following speakers: • William McLoughlin (Cardiff) - Periodontal disease: who’s to blame? • Robin Seymour (Newcastle upon Tyne) - exploring the link between periodontal disease and coronary heart disease (CHD) • Mike Martin (Liverpool) - MRSA, hand care and the dental team • Martin Kelleher (GKT) - managing the risks of treating the compromised dentition • Mike Martin (Liverpool) - new thinking in the prevention of endocarditis. Undergraduate premier award winners included Natalie Walker, a final year student from Birmingham, who’s project ‘A comparison of selected ultrasonic cleaning schemes’ was awarded first place. Second place went to Suzi Carew O’Donnell with her paper ‘Knowledge of emergency room medical staff on their role in management of dental trauma’. She is a final year student at Liverpool. Postgraduate premier award winners were Claire Marshall (first place) for her paper ‘How informed is consent for wisdom teeth? A prospective audit of the quality of consent for wisdom teeth obtained by SHO’s’. Deborah Lockhart came second with her paper ‘An audit of the disinfection of oral devices in general dental practice’. DCP premier award winners included Alan Hutchinson (first place) with his paper ‘Record keeping in dental hygiene initial phase therapy’. Second place went to top hygienist Louise Baguley with her paper ‘Occupational musculoskeletal disorders within the dental profession’. Planning for the Dental Protection and Schülke & Mayr 2006 premier symposium is already underway. Dental Protection Limited (DPL) is an autonomous but wholly owned subsidiary of the Medical Protection Society (MPS), the world’s largest professional indemnity organisation for doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals. Dental Protection has over 48,000 dental members in 70 countries around the globe.
