Kings get the KaVo treatment
11th Jan 2006KaVo recently won a huge contract to provide The Kings Dental Institute with equipment for its regeneration programme. Kings has chosen the highest quality KaVo products to ensure that the dental team, including students and patients are offered the best possible treatment environment. Stage 1 of the renovation has included a full refit of the oral surgery department, a new attractive orthodontic department, a new specialist consultants clinic, an upgraded acute emergencies department and a new state of the art skills laboratory and seminar facility. The first stage of the project started with the renovation of the Maurice Wohl centre, which was completed in early 2005. The Maurice Wohl centre is a general dental practice unit, founded by Professor Maurice Wohl, who wanted to offer a facility which allowed hospital patients to be treated in a community general dental practice environment, giving students invaluable training and outside experience whilst still under supervision. The centre has been newly equipped to a high specification, with 10 KaVo dental units to suit the needs of the individual room requirements; the refit has included new top quality cabinetry. The Maurice Wohl centre is also the home of the KaVo Laser at Kings, which is being used by Dr Chris Louca for his laser clinics which include treatment, training and clinical trials. This exciting refurbishment has led to Kings now having 19 brand new KaVo specialist Primus 1058 surgical units in the oral surgery department. The orthodontic department has been ergonomically designed to suit the requirements of the orthodontic team using it, whilst meeting the specific needs of the patients who tend usually to be children. For this reason, all the dental chairs face the centre corridor maximising the use of space to allow for a parent seating area at the chairside. This is cleverly integrated with the use of partitioning to ensure patient privacy whilst keeping a non-threatening open plan aspect. In addition, to 13 new KaVo Primus 1058 units, the department has been fully refitted with new cabinetry and X-ray facilities including a fully digitalised system with two OPGs, one with ceph and intraoral X-rays. This has produced a top class, pleasant working environment that has meant incredible improvements in comfort and functionality for both the dental teams and patients alike. The fourth floor specialist consultants’ clinics now boast five newly fitted private consultants rooms with KaVo 1080 units for ambidextrous use. There is no question that these 5 surgeries offer facilities equal to any high quality private sector dental surgery, thereby fulfilling the demands of private consultation rooms The new skills lab, designed to meet the growing training needs of the hospital has allowed a new intake of Dental Therapists along with courses for overseas dentists looking to work in the UK. This facility includes 20 KaVo Phantom Head training units with unique delivery and suction system, fit for purpose and fibre optics. A further 10 units will be fitted before the end of November. The 30 KaVo mobile benching units allow flexibility of use for training purposes, maximising the space and working area available. The skills laboratory has been designed with imagination to ensure it is completely functional, with imaginative use of cabinetry to allow for appropriate amalgam disposal when using natural extracted teeth. It includes touch screen white board and full multimedia to make it a state of the art facility. This Skills Lab also boasts excellent facilities for catering and refreshments, along with a 60-seater lecture room making it an ideal location for those looking to hire it out when arranging private courses. So why did Kings choose KaVo? The decision makers at Kings were looking for top quality equipment at competitive prices, which offered proven longevity. Obviously due to the nature of the institution and usage levels required, it is imperative that the equipment purchased guarantees the ability to withstand high usage and excellent flexibility and functionality.
