A London dental professor has been rated among the most powerful Muslim women in Britain.

Professor Farida Fortune, dean of dentistry & professor of medicine in relation to oral health at Queen Mary's, London University, is among those nominated onto Britain's first Muslim Women Power List.

The Power List aims to raise the profile of the 100,000 working Muslim women in the UK.

It commends the achievements of Muslim women in business, the arts, media, voluntary and public sectors.

It will celebrate their success at a gala dinner in Manchester tomorrow (24 March).

The List is the brainchild of the Equality and Human Rights Commission with partners, The Times and Emel magazine, who invited entries on behalf of – or from – any Muslim women currently living and working in the UK.

The judges are Baroness Sarah Hogg, Chairman of 3i; Trevor Phillips, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Sarah Joseph, editor of Emel, the Muslim lifestyle magazine, Michael Binyon, diplomatic editor and leader writer for The Times and Sara Friend, Legal Director, British Olympic Association.

The List will be announced later this week.
