Dental blog reveals nerves of Steele
24th Mar 2009The leader of the independent review into NHS dentistry has revealed he's nervous of the dentist.
Jimmy Steele, who is also professor of oral health services research at Newcastle University, is keeping the dental world up-to-date with the review body's progress via his very own online blog.
A Commons Health Committee report into dental services called for the review that he's heading up in an attempt at addressing problems with dental provision in England.
In the latest offering, Professor Steele admits he's not the best dental patient.
He writes: ‘I am not a very good dental patient. For a start, I don't go a dentist very often, and for a dentist that is probably not unusual (I think we perhaps believe, in my case quite incorrectly, that we are immune to dental problems).
‘When I do go I talk a lot, I want to see what is going on and I do not mind admitting that I don't like it very much at all; I am nervous. I know exactly what to expect, I can picture the procedure in some detail and I trust the person treating me to do an excellent job, but that does not stop me wanting to be somewhere else rather than in the dental chair.
'Even for a dentist, being a dental patient is an intimidating experience.'
