Celebrating the crème de la crème
27th Mar 2009The Smile Awards – created to promote clinical excellence in facial aesthetics and to give dental professionals the chance to be rewarded for practising at the highest level – was a great success.
The crème de la crème of cosmetic dentists up and down the country descended on the prestigious Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London, on Friday 20 March to celebrate aesthetic excellence. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception and were treated to a sumptuous three-course dinner before the awards presentation itself, hosted by one of the judges, Christopher Orr.

Christopher said: ‘Judging these awards proved to be very difficult. The quality and quantity of entries were phenomenal. Both I and the rest of the judges had a very hard job deciding the winning entries.'
Norvishie Arkutu from the North Staffordshire Hospital, who won Best Orthodontic Smile award, said: ‘To even be shortlisted for the Smile Awards is a massive privilege, particularly as I work in a hospital. Awards like this are usually won by dentists in private practices, so it is wonderful to be recognised. I was amazed and surprised to have won this award. The standard was so high. I will definitely be entering even more categories next year!'
James Russell of the London Smile Clinic, winner of the Conservative Smile-Ceramic award and also Highly Commended in the category of Restorative Smile, said: ‘It is a great honour and surprise to be recognised at the awards. I would like to thank Luke Barnett, all my team and FMC for putting on such a fantastic awards
ceremony.'
Ilan Preiss of the Bow Lane Dental Group, who won the Restorative Smile category, said: ‘I am extremely proud to have won this award from my peers. My patients will be happy to know that their teeth are in safe hands! I have to credit my excellent
technician Atsuyoshi Kakinuma who did some fantastic work'.
Ken Harris of Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry was the winner of the Patient's Smile award. He said: ‘I am so pleased. We helped to completely turn around a patient's life just by changing their teeth. She was a woman in her seventies and after we worked on her teeth she took up skydiving and bungee jumping! She even posed for a calendar for a cancer charity wearing nothing but a smile! We helped to turn her life around. I have been shortlisted for nine FMC awards and never won. Winning this has been an absolute surprise and a huge honour!'
Jacqueline Fergus, winner of the Facial Aesthetic award and Highly Commended for Generosity of a Smile, told us: ‘I am highly delighted to have won two awards. I have a fantastic team, which has helped enormously towards our success.'
The overall Smile of the Year gong went to Neil Poyser, Philip Hollows and Jason Watson, who work at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Queen's Medical Centre, in Nottingham. Neil said: ‘I am a little shocked to have won. I didn't expect it. It has been a fantastic evening. We have an amazing team who all worked really hard. We are all very proud and it is a lovely feeling to have won this award.'
FMC would like to thank all the judges and the Smile Award sponsors, Nobel Biocare, Henry Schein Minerva and Software of Excellence. For more information on next year's Smile Awards, contact Rina Solanki on 01923 851733 or email rina.solanki@fmc.co.uk.
