Oasis takes leading role
14th Feb 2006Oasis Healthcare has taken a lead in patient education with the launch of a new initiative explaining the central role of the recall examination in maintaining healthy teeth and gums for life. Oasis says it is responding to the growing number of patients who want to make active and informed decisions about their dental care and to the increased emphasis on disease prevention in healthcare. Oasis practices are rolling out an educational DVD for patients, supported by leaflets and posters describing the recall examination in terms of 10 essential components. The DVD explains each component of the exam in patient friendly terms and encourages patients to question their dental team if there is anything they do not fully understand. Pat Langley, Oasis’ director of clinical services, commented, ‘Many patients think of their recall examination as ‘just a check up’ and do not really understand what the dentist is looking for in terms of oral health. It’s also important for patients to understand the part they need to play in improving their oral health so we’ve stressed this throughout. By communicating more effectively, both about what the dentists does and what the patient needs to do, this should increase the value patients attach to the recall exam.’
