Henry Schein and the British Dental Trade Association (BDTA) supported the Crisis Open Christmas initiative last year with dental equipment, sundries and qualified staff, who offered dental treatment to as many as 1,500 people. Henry Schein provided for ‘quick fix’ extractions, which comprised a major element in the treatments required, while the importance of good oral hygiene and routine dental maintenance was emphasised to the homeless. Amalgam capsules and self developing X-ray film were amongst the items supplied by the BDTA. Demand for the dental service far exceeded supply at Christmas 2004, and both consumables and volunteering dental professionals increased this year. Tony Reed, executive director at the BDTA said; ‘I was delighted to hear that 180 people accessed the dental service and over 70 dental staff (164 shifts) volunteered their valuable time to ensure the service could be used to its full potential. We are pleased to be able to support this worthwhile event with dental equipment and materials.’ Crisis Open Christmas offers it guests a comprehensive range of services, which includes access to medical and dental professionals, counselling staff and other facilities such as chiropody, hairdressing, massage and learning skills, all designed to rebuild confidence and help the homeless retake their places in society.
