GDC reminds dentists of special care dentistry list
28th Sep 2009The General Dental Council (GDC) is encouraging dentists, who wish to be specialists in special care dentistry, to make their applications to the specialist list as soon as possible.
Special care dentistry is concerned with improving the oral health of individuals and groups in society who have a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social impairment or disability, or a combination of these.
In particular, this area of dentistry focuses on adults and adolescents requiring special care.
The special care dentistry list first opened in October 2008, so it is currently halfway through a two-year ‘transitional period' (to 30 September 2010).
This means that registered dentists can currently apply to join the list on the basis of the relevant specialist training, qualifications and experience they have acquired to date.
After 30 September 2010, UK applicants will need to hold a Certificate of Completion in Specialist Training to join the list.
Since the list opened last October, 70 dentists have joined the list.
The GDC is calling on dentists who wish to join the list to submit applications sooner rather than later to avoid unnecessary delays towards the end of the transitional period.
Duncan Rudkin, chief executive and registrar of the GDC said: ‘A specialist list in special care dentistry allows patients, the public and dentists making referrals to identify those professionals, who are specially trained and experienced in treating people who need the care of a specialist. By being able to search for specialists in special care dentistry on our website, patients, the public and referring dentists will be able to find professionals near to where they live or work. We would encourage any dentists who are appropriately trained, qualified and experienced to apply to join the list.'
Dentists wishing to join the new list can download the application pack from the GDC website (www.gdc-uk.org) or contact the GDC registration team by email at assessments@gdc-uk.org or by phone on 020 7344 3741.
