The Golden Poo awards have been hailed a success in the campaign to raise awareness of hand hygiene and the perils of cross infection.

With the release of the updated HTM 01-05 government guidelines for dental practices and also the outbreak of swine flu H1N1 virus, cross infection has never been more newsworthy – and these awards served as a timely reminder.

The Golden Poo awards – described as a ‘hilarious, sold-out, red-carpet evening, with a serious message' by its creators – were the highlight of Global Handwashing Day, now in its second year.

This was designed to encourage global handwashing with soap – as well as put the state of handwashing in 70 countries under the spotlight.

Recent research reveals even health workers are guilty of failing to wash their hands properly while UK researchers found that shaming people into hand washing with soap was far more effective than polite reminders.

Hygiene specialists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine reported that the idea of someone watching and judging was the most powerful way to boost handwashing.

Elswhere, an Australian study revealed that doctors were the worst health workers when it comes to washing their hands, with fewer than half managing to do so despite knowing its importance in reducing infection rates.

The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia today, found that the compliance rate for hand hygiene among doctors was just 39 per cent in July last year.

The Golden Poo awards was hosted by Dr Phil Hammond and staged at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square.

The winner was Delphine with 'Dancing in the Loo', a short animation designed to highlight the importance of hand washing.
