Dentist tells students to get patients brushing
24th May 2010'Everyone wants a beautiful smile and brushing is the simplest way to start motivating patients' was the advice from Dr Mani Bhardwaj, principal dentist for The Smile Studios Dental Spa in Richmond, west London.
Dr Bhardwaj was at Bart's and The London School of Dentistry and Medicine speaking to final-year dental undergraduates about how to educate patients about their dental hygiene and care.
Dr Bhardwaj's series of talks, supported by Philips, and on behalf of the BDA, was designed to give future dentists essential career advice.
This includes introducing them to the commercial realities of dentistry and the importance of practice retailing as a way of offering the best possible service to patients ensuring they sustain their oral hygiene at home.
He suggested that promoting dental products does not mean that the dentist has to feel or act like a sales representative.
At his own practice, for example, the Philips Sonicare toothbrush is incorporated into – and complements – the top quality service provided. Patients are recommended to try it before buying and are offered a free session with the hygienist to do so.
Since graduating from Bart's in 2004, Dr Bhardwaj has become a principal dentist in only five years, turning a non-performing practice into one of the leading dental practices in London.
Dr Bhardwaj introduced students to the hygiene benefits of the Philips Sonicare toothbrush, giving them the opportunity to try it out for themselves.
In outlining its effectiveness he compared the motion of the Sonicare with a paintbrush, gently yet pervasively brushing the teeth.
He believes that the Sonicare does not damage or make teeth more sensitive and therefore he recommends its use for all patients, including those with implants or gum problems – young and old. He also trumpeted its charging power, pointing out that it lasted eight days without charging, when he forgot to take it with him on a trip to New York. .
Patricia Rawsthorne, of Philips, who supported the meetings said: 'Mani Bhardwaj's approach is highly refreshing and innovative which is why we are delighted to be working with him. He is passionate about training, giving back to his profession and getting involved with a large number of charitable activities. He has previously assisted with clinical teaching at Barts and given talks on looking after your teeth at primary and secondary schools.'
Dr Bhardwaj also provides peripatetic surgical and cosmetic dental services to practices from the Midlands to the South Coast, and this and his advocacy for Sonicare, make him ideal as an unpaid Official Ambassador for Philips.
