Dental students go back to sixth form
28th May 2010The Peninsula Dental School showed its commitment to producing home grown dentists when two of its students returned to their school, Liskeard Community College, to talk to pupils about their experiences.
Dental students Katy Rowe and Jamie Robins, both former pupils of Liskeard Community College, explained how they had prepared themselves for a career in dentistry.
Katy, who is a first-year student at the Peninsula Dental School, said: 'The education I received at Liskeard prepared me for my first degree which I am now using to develop a really rewarding and challenging career in dentistry. On this visit I wanted to do more for my old school by encouraging its sixth-formers to think about dentistry as a career.'
Katy and Jamie used video and slides to give the pupils a feel for the innovative training they could experience at the Peninsula Dental School.
They were accompanied by the Peninsula WAMS (Widening Access to Medical Schools) team who gave the pupils hands on experience using simulated clinical skills training.
The visit was well-received by pupils at Liskeard Community College.
Donna Bryant, head teacher at Liskeard Community College, said: 'Our sixth form is a great success and has achieved record results. It was delightful to welcome back our students from the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry who are preparing themselves for such rewarding and important careers. Our gifted and talented pupils really enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about careers in medicine and dentistry.'
As well as Katy and Jamie, another former pupil of Liskeard Community College studying at the School is Dan Smirthwaite (third-year dentistry).
