Dental notes to self
3rd Jun 2010I could not be without:
1. My loupes – I really can't work without them and I think they have truly saved my posture
2. My Bambach saddle for the same reason
3. Good quality radiographs to assess bone levels. Radiographs are essential to our everyday clinical practice and a key educational tool for my patients. Explaining an open contact, showing calculus and bone loss are far simpler with the patient's own view on their own mouth
4. Liquid disclosing solution, again the best motivator is to see your own plaque in your own mouth
5. A catalogue of hand instruments which includes my very favourite slimline ultrasonics that are in frequent use
6. Interdental polishing strip and topical fluoride. All of our patients undergo fluoride preventive therapy as part of maintenance and I certainly see less caries and sensitivity as a result.
7. An intraoral camera. I am not actually sure how I worked without one! A picture really does say a thousand words and I really don't have to say much, the patients seem to do the talking when they see themselves in all their glory on the big screen. There is often a gasp and the question ‘is that my mouth?'. It's oh, so familiar.
8. My excellent team. I really would not be capable of performing my job well without the excellent highly skilled team at Senova. I rely on them for almost everything! If it wasn't for all of us working together the job would not get done with such expertise and skill
Also…
9. Always try new things. New tools and techniques are fun and very useful
But…
10. Don't given up a new tool straight away. Encourage the patient to try your recommended tool and technique for a 6-12 month period before you simply try a new gadget.
