A Glasgow gathering of oral hygiene experts

The world's largest oral hygiene symposium comes to Glasgow, 1-3 July.
A three-yearly event, the International Symposium on Dental Hygiene (ISDH), held under the auspices of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists, visits the UK for only the second time and is being organised by the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT).
There will be a host of eminent speakers from across the globe (making up more than 24 hours of CPD) as well as numerous abstracts and posters for significant research papers. Additionally, a 60-stand exhibition will run throughout the symposium and there will be social and cultural events.
Taking place in the magnificent Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre [located close to air, rail and road links], ISDH 2010 will attract an expected 1,500 delegates – making it the biggest oral hygiene networking opportunity on the planet.
The symposium package includes admission to the scientific programme, abstract room, trade fair, opening and closing ceremonies, morning and afternoon refreshments as scheduled, a light buffet lunch on Friday and Saturday and a delegate bag. You can also book for just one day.
Registration for ISDH 2010 is open now and bookings will be taken right up to 30 June. However, you will save money if you book by 16 June.
Hygienists recognised
Rarely does the valuable research work undertaken by hygienists around the world get the recognition it deserves but this is not the case at ISDH.
On Saturday 3 July, there's a special session for the presentation of papers by the winners of the second World Dental Hygienists Awards. Sponsored by the Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion, the IFDH and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene, awards are presented in three categories.
The project category has been won by Patricia Jednorozec MPH, RDHAP from Califonia. Her paper was entitled Geriatric oral health access project. She says: ‘The Sunstar award has overwhelmed me. It is an honour that means so much to me as a dental professional.
‘As for ISDH 2010, I am so blessed to be able to go. My husband and I have been to Glasgow before and it is one of our most favourite places. The people are so friendly. Also, I have wanted to go to this event because of being able to meet dental professionals from all over the world.'
Sherry L Priebe, DipDH, BDSc (DH), RDH won the research category for her work with oral squamous cell carcinoma and cultural risk habits in patients at the oncology hospital in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam.
Sherry says: ‘I am honoured to be recognised with such a prestigious award in furthering world dental hygiene research as my energies and resources have been dedicated to my wonderful and fulfilling profession.'
Sherry added: ‘I am looking forward to ISDH 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland as the pleasure and honour will be mine to address such an imminent issue of oral cancer in our world to my colleagues around the globe. As the symposium for 2010 is centered on ‘Oral Health – New Concepts for the New Millennium', I will be thrilled to join international dental hygienists in realising intellectual growth and efficient opportunity. I thank the organisers for the occasion to share this imperative research study of ‘Oral Cancer and Cultural Oral Habits of the Southeast Asian Population and its Migration' in collaboration with the University of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and the University of British Columbia in Canada. Through knowledge transfer, dental hygienists will realise how seemingly unrelated oral habits have a profound effect on the dental profession as diverse populations migrate to our communities. We are to think globally and act locally!'
The student category was awarded to Maria Fjellström of Karolinska Institutet, Sweden for her research paper Cognitive behavioural therapy as a method to improve adherence to oral hygiene instructions.
The moderator for the hour-long session will be Jill Rethman, RDH, BA, a director of Sunstar Foundation for Oral Health Promotion.
