Pay award uplift for Scottish dentists

Dentists in Scotland will see a 0.9% pay increase on the whole item of service
The British Dental Association (BDA) has persuaded the Scottish Government to reconsider the way it is implementing this year's Doctors and Dentists Review Body (DDRB) pay award.
The BDA's Scottish Dental Practice Committee (SDPC) has successfully argued that the DDRB had taken the expenses element of the pay award into account and that the 0.9% pay increase should apply to the whole item of service rather than just the expense element of the payment. The Scottish Government's initial view of the DDRB's recommendations had led it to calculate the increase should be 0.5% on the item of service fees.
Robert Kinloch, chair of SDPC, said: 'We welcome the Scottish Government's acknowledgement of the real intention of the DDRB. This comes after campaigning by the Scottish Dental Practice Committee and we are pleased to see that our work persuading the Scottish Government to look again at this situation has been worthwhile.'
The Scottish Dental Practice Committee made representations to the Scottish Government that the expenses element had already been taken into account by the DDRB in reaching its recommendation to increase the individual items on the fee scale and that the Scottish Government's approach was therefore flawed.
The Scottish Government looked again at the issue and sought further clarification on the recommendation from the DDRB Secretariat. Having done that, the Scottish Government is now able to agree that the uplift for independent GDPs should be 0.9% applied to the whole item of service (and not just the expenses element).
