National Smile Month
17th May 2006To celebrate the 30th anniversary of National Smile Week, this year it is to be expanded into National Smile Month, and will take place between 14 May and 13 June. The biggest annual oral health campaign in the UK, National Smile Month, which is organised by the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), provides a chance to deliver vital oral health information to millions of people across the country. There is increasing evidence to show that gum disease is one of the causes of heart disease, lung disease and other health problems. In addition, gum disease, stained teeth and bad breath have an adverse effect on people’s confidence and overall happiness with research showing that the appearance of a person’s teeth often affects other people’s judgment of their social and intellectual abilities. The campaign also aims to show that neglecting teeth not only affects the ability to chew and digest food, but can also alter the way people pronounce words and the shape of their face. The BDHF publishes a series of patient information leaflets called Tell Me About, which covers a wide range of dental questions and conditions. These include: dental care for mothers and babies, teens and older people, smoking and oral health, bad breath, gum disease, crowns, veneers, living with braces and tooth whitening. For more information, call the The BDHF helpline on 0845 063 1188 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm), or visit their website by clicking the link below.
