DCPs inspired to pursue dental research

Preconceptions that DCPs do not or cannot undertake research were challenged on 27 November at an event run by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the British Society for Dental Hygiene and Therapy.
This was the second such event, following on from an inaugural Research Day held in June 2009.
More than 50 DCPs were in attendance to hear colleagues present the results of their research and to discuss how to overcome barriers that prevent DCPs from engaging in research.
The overall objective of the event was to provide delegates with a better understanding of possible forms of research and where they can turn to for help.
The topics covered during the day included how to undertake retrospective studies and literature reviews, as well as DCP research as part of a PhD.
The fruits of 'real world' research were presented on topics such as an evaluation of a new oscillating rotating power toothbrush, and a study of DCP skills usage.
The Research Day concluded with delegates proposing potential new research topics.
Despite a lack of funding for DCP research, many delegates stated that they felt inspired to pursue their research interests.
A third Research Day in 2011 is already planned to build on the success of this event, which was generously supported by Proctor & Gamble.

I am fully behind any venture which encourages and facilitates the participation of DCPs in research and would urge any DCP wishing to progress with research to contact me or one of the two National Research facilitators.'
